Subchapter S Corporation Tax Status

Subchapter S Corporation Tax Status

Overview of the Subchapter S Corporation DesignationAlthough the term Subchapter S Corporation sounds as if it applies to a certain type of company, in actuality, it is merely a term used by the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) to designate a particular tax status. Almost any company that is comprised of 75 or less shareholders can apply for the Subchapter S Corporation tax status designation. Being approved for a Subchapter S Corporation status allows the company to be taxed as if it were a partnership or sole proprietorship. An application is generally submitted just after a company has incorporated. At any time a company may choose to withdraw from Subchapter S Corporation tax status by filing another form with the IRS. Withdrawals must be submitted prior to the beginning of a new tax year.Subchapter S Corporation Eligibility RequirementsIn order for a business to qualify as an S Corporation, there are several eligibility requirements that need to be met. Any corporation that meets the following criteria can be approved for Subchapter S Corporation status:* The company must have 75 or fewer shareholders, and each shareholder must agree to file as an S Corporation.* Every stockholder must be a resident and citizen of the United States* Stock sold by the company must be of a single class* The company is required to use the calendar year as the official fiscal yearIf a corporation meets these requirements, they must file form 2553 with the IRS to be granted Subchapter S Corporation tax status.Advantages to Subchapter S Corporation StatusThis tax status is appealing to many business owners for several reasons. The primary advantage to filing as an S Corporation is that income is passed through directly to the shareholders who file corporate income with their personal taxes. In this manner, the corporation avoids being taxed twice for the same income. In most cases, S Corporations do not pay any income tax and losses are absorbed by the shareholders instead of the corporation. Additional advantages to Subchapter S Corporation tax status includes:* Return on investment earnings do not fall under self-employment tax status providing the shareholder/employee receives reasonable compensation for their work.* Financial documentation and accounting is less complicated than that required by traditional corporations.* S Corporation status may provide easier access to credit resources, depending on the business history of the corporation.Disadvantages to Subchapter S Corporation StatusWhen considering whether or not to file for Subchapter S Corporation tax status, companies should also be aware of potential disadvantages. Because the financial power is in the hands of the shareholders, executive decisions need to be agreed upon by all. Disagreements between individual shareholders can lead to a stall in the process. Additionally, stockholder/employees must declare health insurance and other employee benefits as taxable income if they own more than a 2% share of stock. Subchapter S Corporation tax status is most beneficial to corporations with small numbers of shareholders that have a common vision for the future of the company.

Create Long-Lasting Wealth with Simple Home Business Solutions

Create Long-Lasting Wealth with Simple Home Business Solutions

Starting your own home business might seem overwhelming at first. There's so much to consider - finances, goals, and the type of business you should start. As a new "home business" owner, you can easily get frustrated with all the options that are available. Don't complicate matters. There are many simple home business solutions available that can help you create long-lasting wealth without adding stress to your life. Here are some great ideas to get you started."Don't Reinvent the Wheel"You've probably heard the old saying, "Don't reinvent the wheel." Most frustration in business comes from trying to create something new - a new product, new service, or even a new way of doing things. The good news is you don't have to create anything new. With an online business, it's very easy to sign up with others and sell their products for a commission. Most companies are glad to pay you to promote their products. It saves them time and money. There are millions of products and services online that are just "itching" for more promotion. You can easily find products that interest you and make money online while doing what you love. These products have already been through their testing period so you get to enjoy the benefits as you work from home.Earn a Residual IncomeWith some companies, you can earn a residual income (month after month) when signing on new clients. Those in the business of Web education, Internet marketing, Web design services, medical billing and claims, insurance, travel booking, legal services, accounting, and financial investments will often pay you for monthly clients. You'll earn money each month that the client remains faithful in payments. In other words, you could earn up to 20 percent or more of a client's payment every month! Multiply that number by a hundred and you will have a very lucrative "residual income" .Choose High-Commission Products and ServicesDon't waste your valuable time promoting products and services that pay very little in commissions. Seek out home business solutions where you can earn a generous commission amount for each sale. When promoting products for someone else, the visitor/conversion ratio will likely be much lower than it would be when selling your own products. So, you'll have to work a little harder to get more visitors to your website. When you do sell a product, it will be much more rewarding if you make $100 or more instead of $10 or more!Simplify Your Business PromotionsAnother area of frustration for a home business owner is promotion. There are many ways to promote an online business, but usually only a few actually work for the long term. The first thing to do is create a website of your own that you can tweak and add content to on a daily basis. From your website, offer tips and plenty of fresh content about the products and services you offer. Find your target audience and write to them. Give them the information they're seeking before you try to sell them a product. With some home business solutions, you can receive your own website free. But, be sure it will be your own website, and that you can add to it whenever you want. Being unique with your website is very important for receiving search engine exposure. Also, beware of scams. Check out online companies before investing any money. Use dependable home business solution directories that will investigate home businesses for you. This will save you time and money. And remember, whatever you do, keep it simple!

Think Small And Grow Big!

In this evergrowing-techno-jungle we call the Internet, it's easy for the little guys to get overlooked. If you aren't Coca-Cola, Microsoft, or Amazon, it can be hard to compete. Smallbusinesses are faced with the challenge of standing out in the face of giants. So how do you differentiate and survive? The key is to be SMALL in a big way by capturing the essence of YOU in your web site!To illustrate my point I'll paint a picture. Imagine that you have a taste for a strawberry milkshake, so you head down to Joe's Ice Cream Parlor. When you walk in, Joe greets you with a smile and asks, "How you doing Sam? Do you want the usual strawberry shake?" You plop yourself down on the barstool and say, "That'd be great!" Joe asks how the wife and kids are. You ask how Joe's business is doing.Joe pours the milkshake into a tall curved soda glass, pops a straw in, and puts not one, but two cherries on top. What's good about this picture? It's small at it's best! It's the good ole' days of Mom and Pop stores relived. You know that when you go to Joe's you'll get more than a great milk shake you love, it's the experience of it. And the value that Joe adds to that milkshake goes a long way toward building and keeping a relationship with that client.Let's talk about how you capture the "you" and put its power to work in your business?STOREFRONTIt all starts when you walk into Joe's Ice Cream Shop. The nostalgic look, the music from the jukebox, the real whip cream he tops his milk shakes with. Does your web site have stopping power? If you don't capture the visitor's attention in a few seconds, you've lost their business. Through use of friendly copy, attractive graphics, and color you can add interest and set the tone for your visitors.MOTTO:The front door of your web site is the home page. You need tostate right at the top of the page: who you are, what you do, and why customers should care! What is your unique selling point? Are you friendly? Are you affordable? Are you available 24/7?Do you have a specialty? Are you a one-stop shop?Remember those catchy phrases you can't get out of your head:Bounty, the quicker picker upper... Burger King - we make it your way... Hertz, we try harder.... These are perfect examples of slogans that tell customers immediately WHO you are and WHY you are better than the rest.WHAT ARE THE SPECIALS?Joe lists his "soda for the day" right on his menu for all to see.Similarly, you need to tell visitors about the exciting features your site has to offer. Write home page that reads like a "special of the day" menu telling customers about the free reports, the resources, the products, and other features your site has to offer them.If you offer a free initial trial or full money back guarantee make it VISIBLE on your home page!WORDS:Just as Joe's conversation gave you a warm friendly shopping experience, you can put personality in your web copy to create a friendly visitor experience. Steer clear of web copy that makes you sound like a high-pressure car salesman or a fancy high profile VP of sales. Instead, write honestly with a personal approach.Your web site copy (writing) should NOT be a laundry list pulled from your resume or simply listing your services. Instead, tell people in your own words what you have to offer them, how it will help them, how much they will save, how much easier it will make things for them, how convenient your are. Think like a customer and ask, "Why should I buy from this company versus the one down the street?" The answers to THAT will form writing for your web site.USE OTHERS WORDS:When your friend George said, "You've GOT to try the Milk Shakes at Joe's. You won't believe how good they are" you were SOLD! There's nothing like a heartfelt testimonial to build trust and credibility. If you don't have a big brand name and the reputation that goes with it, you'd need to give the customer a reason to believe that you or your product does what you promise.Testimonials do this. And honest words from a happy customer will get you more customers than any high paid advertisement ever will.A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS:Joe always had a way of making you feel right at home in his shop. Similarly, by adding a picture of yourself on the web site, your customers will feel like they know you. The more customers feel they know you, the more likely they will want to do business with you.If you don't have a good picture of yourself here's some ideas for you. Go to Sears, Glamour Shots, or JC Penny studio and get one taken. If you take "horrible" formal pictures, consider taking one of you "in action" doing what you do. If you teach, consider showing a picture of you working with students. You can even "cut" yourself out of a good casual shot, remove the background, add a shadow, and make a GREAT head shot! See my picture on about us page http://www.kcustom.com/aboutus.htm. I take TERRIBLE formal picture because I hate getting my picture taken. This one is of me in KeyWest on my honeymoon. No wonder Ilook so happy! If you sell widgets, show a picture of your product on your web site. When people shop in a store they like to feel, touch, and hold the product. Recreate this experience with pictures and visual imagery with words. Don't tell customers that it's "solid leather construction", instead tell them "the seat is made with leather so soft you'll sink right into it"!MAINTAIN FRIENDLY, RESPONSIVE COMMUNICATION WITH CUSTOMERSHave you ever gone to a store counter and waited, and WAITED? You could see the store clerk standing up there chatting with her fellow sales clerk. You clear your throat, and try to make eye contact with her, and then FINALLY she comes over and asks, "Can I help you?" This is how your customers feel when they send your business an email and you don't respond right away.Responses to emails should be timely. If you don't have time to answer someone's question right away, send them a note to tell them you got their inquiry and when they CAN expect an answer.Go back in your head to the "waiting at the counter" scenario . . . when the clerk says, "I'll be right with you" it sure makes you feel better doesn't it? It tells the customer "You are important to me, I noticed you, and I will help you soon as I can"OFFER IMPECCABLE SERVICE:The key to Joe's success at the Ice Cream Shop wasn't just his incredible milk shakes; it was the value he added by adding the extra cherry on top. Promise 8 and deliver 9. What do you do to add value to your business? Give freely of yourself by adding those little extras.IT'S ALL IN THE PACKAGING:Somehow milkshakes never taste as good in a paper cup with a plastic lid. And even though the milkshake may cost $1 extra at Joe's, you don't mind because you know your are getting your money's worth. Think of ways to package your services that are attractive and convenient for your clients. Don't nickel and dime your customers to death. Sometimes $150 per hour fees can sound pretty scary to clients. Think perhaps about creating a package with a set number of offerings at a set price. You could offer a basic, a deluxe, and the GOLD package. When clients know exactly what to expect, it takes the "fear" out of their purchase.ANSWERING THE PHONE:I don't know about you, but there is nothing that impresses me more when I call a customer help number and actually get HUMAN live help! I want a person who listens and understands my problems. I don't want to choose options 1, 2, or 3 and push a button on the phone. When Joe answers the phone he says "Welcome to Joe's Ice Cream Shop, this is Joe!" What a nice first impression that makes! Smile when you answer, people will hear the difference in your voice.BE SMALL - BE YOU - You won't believe the difference it makes!I can tell you from experience that being "myself" is what has built my business. And everyday as I build web sites for small business owners I help them put a piece of themselves into it. The importance of branding yourself cannot be overstated. Take a look at your own business. Try to look with a different set of eyes. How do you present yourself? Does my site "feel" like a warm comfortable place to do business OR does your web site look like screaming over-hyped ad or business brochure? Remember the secret to competing with the BIG guys, lies in adding the human touch to your service, your communication, and your web site! Act small for BIG profits!

Farming with GPS

Ever since I have been able to use Garmin GPS I can now grow crops more effectively than before. You might wonder to yourself How can some Podunk farmer grow better with GPS? Well, first of all, were not all like that, and secondly the trick is how you manage it on your land. With my Garmin GPS mapping and my tractors and planters using it I can fit more crop onto one field than ever before, by making precision decision, as I say. First of all lets say you have yourself a nice mapped out chunk of land that is the shape of a square, and it is a total of 10 acres of land. Well, the old way was planting by eye, or trying to drive in a straight line for reference lines and then doing it. Of course there was nothing really wrong with that, but small deviations created what could only be described as the butterfly effect. In basic terms it means small actions at the beginning could lead to large results at the end. If one of the workers I hire goes off and changes less than a degree in the angle of the crop line, it doesnt seem like much but down the line it could equal to a whole line of crop being abandoned because it cant be fit into the parcel of land. Furthermore I can now map out the land easier, quicker, and make the rows just barely an inch tighter, and fit in an extra row of, oh, lets say corn. By mapping it out using accurate maps, and Garmin GPS I can make sure that my crops will grow correctly and the way I want. That also means that in my farm trucks, like the big one Jose uses, he can take it down the field and use the big seeder in an absolute straight line after making perfect reference lines with the truck. Additionally to that, Jose can also drive the seeder using a handheld Garmin GPS fitted to the dashboard, and know if hes going straight enough or not. The entire GPS has allowed me to marginally increase my production, which means I increase my profit, and by doing that keep my farming as profitable as possible, in spite of these times. I know I may not have a big farm, or a large workforce, but by being able to map out my land and then plot out crops and use land that was previously wasted I am able to take full advantage of the Garmin GPS to make sure I put food on the plates of people who buy my corn and other crops. I can also use those spaces between the land that were previously unused because of poor planning to grow smaller crops, such as tomatoes; in some areas I also plan to put in a few pumpkins too. With those crops Ill be able to sell just a little bit more and that makes a big difference down the line. Like I said, the butterfly effect, its responsible for variations costing me money, but also variations that can make me money too. By saving what is insignificant as an inch, it grants me a foot every twelve rows, and after three sets of twelve, that is three extra feet of growing room something I could have never done without the Garmin GPS.
